In contrast with thermal transfer printing, direct thermal "prints" its contents by directly heating the paper, which is a special type of material which blackens when heated. Thus, no ribbon is required for direct thermal printing.
Special type of paper, very similar surface with art paper. Blackens when in contact with heat. Most commonly used in weighing machines in supermarkets.
Non-waterproof, tear-able.
Ribbon: None required
To differentiate between art paper and direct thermal, just scratch the surface of it. If an obvious black line is present, it is direct thermal.
